Mid-March to mid-April is the perfect time for viewing the spectacular Northern Lights, for cod fishing and of course for skiing in the Lyngen Alps above the polar circle, a truly unique area.

The touring (800 to 1400 metres vertical distance) begins at sea level, so a day’s skiing can entail variable snow conditions and it is not unusual to encounter both powder snow and spring skiing conditions, such a treat when the conditions are just right. We ski right back down to the water’s edge, past charming little villages with their characteristically colourful wooden houses. After the day on the slopes the boat navigates along the Norwegian coast around the islands and through the fjords. This is the perfect time to relax, to either stretch out in your cabin or to join the others in the central living space for a chat or to listen to some music and, of course, there is cod fishing from the deck and endless opportunities to take photos of the breathtaking views… From our floating mountain hut there is also the possibility of being dropped off on the water’s edge for an improvised expedition or for a beer in a village lost in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to see the spectacular Northern Lights, often visible in the spring, bringing an additional dimension to the spectacular beauty of this part of the world.

Day 1: It’s possible to meet up with the guides at Geneva airport for those who are flying out of Geneva with a « Pays d’en Haut » air ticket, or in Tromsø at the end of the day. From the airport a transfer vehicle takes us through the tunnels of Tromsø to the port where the boat is docked. Once settled on-board, a welcome aperitif provides the opportunity to meet the others and to put the finishing touches to our programme. The same evening we raise the anchor and we’re off for the Lyngen Alps, already visible on the other side of the fjord. The ski tours for the week are on and around the Lyngen Alps. Depending on the time your flight arrives in Tromsø, it is very easy for you to get to the boat. Bus number 901 leaves the airport about every 30 minutes and takes you directly to the port where the boat is docked. You get off the bus at the stop in front of the Scandic Hotel (located next to the Clarion Collection Hotel). The ride will cost you 90 NOK, approximately 9€. Day 2 to Day 7: After a good night’s sleep on-board and a copious breakfast we leave the boat by dinghy to be dropped off at the water’s edge, ready to conquer the wide open spaces. We have the option of crossing from one fjord to another or of skiing back down to our departure point: we are able to adapt our programme depending on the snow conditions, our form and our inspiration, as we have radio contact with the captain of the boat. The vertical distances range from 800m to 1833m for Jiehkkevárri, the highest summit, but the climb is minus the fatigue you usually encounter due to altitude, as we start out at sea level. At the end of the day’s tour a generous afternoon tea awaits us, all we need to keep us going until dinnertime. Generally, we navigate to the next site at the end of the day. Our cabin is a cosy area protected from bad weather. Each evening we are either anchored or docked so it’s possible for you to have a hot shower and a good night’s sleep. Evenings are convivial, our floating base camp provides all the comfort and warmth you need for a pleasant stay on-board. The last evening, with our skis packed away and our heads full our adventures, we celebrate the end of our trip, either on-board or on land, depending on our navigation programme, Friday being the big night out in Scandinavian countries. Possible programme: Day 2: Ullstinden (1 080 m) Departing from the beach, we skin to this summit located between two fjords then ski back down, facing the sea and the islands, either via the same itinerary or crossing over to another fjord facing the Lyngen Alps, the boat waiting for us at our chosen destination. Time: 3 to 4 hours. Day 3: Storgalten (1219 m) We leave from the little port of Lenangsstraumen for a beautiful ascent up to some magnificent crests and then from the summit we ski down across an impressive glacier to the sea. Time: 4 to 6 hours. Day 4: Crossing of Ulloya (1 490 m) A beautiful day awaits us as we traverse the island, crossing some superb crests to gain access to wide slopes of virgin snow. We ski down to the port where the boat awaits us. Time : 5 to 6 hours. Day 5: Crossing of Koppangen (1395 m) Early morning departure for the magnificent Strupen glacier at the heart of the Lyngen Alps. We ski down to the adorable little port of Koppangen. Time: 4 to 6 hours. Day 6: Crossing of the Arnoya peninsula (1260 m) Superb itinerary with views across the fjords and the sea, with a descent down to the little fishing village of Lauksletta. Time: 5 to 6 hours. Day 7: Nordfjellet (1000 m) One of the most beautiful days of the trip. A gradual climb brings us up to some remarkable crests followed by a superb ski down to a lake before crossing back to the boat. Time: 4 to 5 hours. The ski tours are chosen each day depending on the weather, the snow conditions and the clients’ physical form. Vertical distances are from 800 to 1400m and involve 3 to 6 hours skinning. The difficulty of the slopes is chosen according to the clients’ skiing level with the possibility of forming two groups of different levels. Accommodation is on-board throughout the trip. Day 8: Return trip from Tromsø. This programme is of course just an indication of the possibilities and it will be necessary to adapt to the weather conditions, conditions in the mountains and the participants’ physical form and skiing level. The mountain guides remain the sole authority in terms of the choice of itinerary and can modify the programme for safety reasons.

Date, place and time of the rendezvous Rendezvous at Geneva airport on April 13th 2019 at 5:00 a.m. subject to flight times and ticket availability or at Tromsø at 7:00 p.m. Getting to the rendezvous point By your own means Date, place and time at which the group will disperse 10:00 p.m. on the 20th of April 2019 at Geneva airport subject to flight times and ticket availability or at Tromsø at 7:00 a.m. Luggage One big travel bag each, as the storage space is limited (no rigid bags). It is preferable that the skis be transported in a ski bag, ideal for the flight but also for the boat. Travel light !! We advise a bag along the lines of the Douchebag (https://douchebags.com/the-douchebag), which offers numerous advantages for the type of trip we organise: - A single large capacity bag in which you can transport your skis, ski boots and all your belongings, with the added advantage that you won’t have to pay a supplement to register a second bag for the hold (ski bag plus travel bag). - Ease of transport as it is a wheely bag with carry handles and a shoulder strap. - Possibility of reducing the size of the bag once the skis are removed and of transforming it into a regular travel bag, modifying the volume with an adjustment strap. - Easily stowed by rolling it up into its minimum size, which makes it perfect for places with limited space such as boats (impossible to do with a rigid bag). - Best value on the market for travel bags, considering the volume and the adaptability of the bag. Buying the bag may seem an additional cost but considering the saving you will make on registering additional baggage (often around 100€ per plane trip) it’s a good investment. Weather Statistically speaking, this a period when good weather reigns, but beware, the weather can change very quickly and Gore-Tex clothing and a good hood are recommended.
